Park your bike securely and under cover

Umeå University has opened a new indoor bike parking outside the MIT Building. Here you can keep your bike snow free in winter and also lock and charge your electric bike battery.

On Tuesday, 13 February, the university's new indoor bike parking building opened. It is centrally located on campus Umeå: outside the MIT Building, between Universum and Lindell Hall. It is open to students and staff, and you can access it with your Umu card.

Here, there is parking available in both single and double-decker racks. Storage boxes, where you can lock and charge your electric bike battery, will be installed during week 10. Outside the building, there are several bike parking areas under roofing.

The bike parking building opened on the same day as Umeå School of Sport Sciences organised Health on Campus and is part of an initiative promoting health and well-being at Umeå University.

"The bike parking aims to provide a weather-protected and safer parking solution, with the broader goal of promoting and facilitating biking to and from campus Umeå in all seasons", explains Mirja Westling, facilities planner at Property Management Office.

Umeå University also aims to promote biking from an environmental and sustainability perspective. In the travel survey conducted by the University last fall, weather-protected and secure bike parking was identified as a priority by many. It is also a sustainability measure highlighted by the student unions.

"Promoting sustainable commuting and sustainable mobility is furthermore a priority area in the cooperation agreement for sustainability issues between the University and the property owner Akademiska Hus, an agreement aimed at both environmental and social sustainability", continues Mirja Westling.

On Tuesday 13 February, University Director Hans Wiklund and Fredrik Nyberg from Akademiska Hus opened the new bike parking facility.

With the help of convenient two-tiered bike racks, over 100 bikes fit into the new bike parking facility.

The building is mostly constructed of wood, according to sustainable construction principles, and will have a green roof of plants once the snow has melted. The architects who designed the building are Ahrbom and partner. The property owner is Akademiska Hus.
