Style guide for the use of capital letters in English titles

Academic titles in the Appointments Procedure, Vice-Chancellor titles, members of the University Management, as well as dean, deputy dean and associate dean should be written with lowercase letters in general reference, and with initial capital letters when referring to a specific person, role or title.

Example

• Sara Karlsson, Professor of Molecular Epidemiology
• Associate Professor Peter Andersson
• All previous professors of physics have ...
• The Vice-Chancellor will give a welcome address at the conference.
• The colloquium gathers vice-chancellors from various universities.
• She is Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology.
• The University Director will give a welcome address at the conference

Other, non-academic titles and technical/administrative staff titles should only be written with initial capital letter when in direct conjunction with a name, and in general, the title comes after the name. When titles are used in other positions, even when they are referring to a specific individual, they are written with lowercase letters.

Example

• Lisa Smith, Communications Officer at the Department of Culture and Media Studies.
• Mattias Bergkvist, Senior Librarian at the Umeå University Library.
• Carl Svensson is head of the International Office.
• She is a legal officer at Umeå University.

When a title is being replaced by a similar title without its prefix, such as for instance institutionssamordnare – department coordinator becomes samordnare – coordinator, or when seniortekniker – senior technician becomes tekniker – technician, this will take effect in the staff directory shown on the web. However, the employment contract will remain the same.
