Call for enabling sabbatical at an international university

6 February 2019

The Strategic Board for Research (FON) at the Faculty of Medicine opens a call for basic funding for education, thus enabling teachers and researchers the opportunity to carry out a sabbatical at an international university. Apply no later than Monday, April 1st.

The call aims to strengthen the research and doctoral studies at the faculty.

To be eligible to apply the applicant must have tenure as an actively researching professor or senior lecturer (lektor). Application is made in consultation with the Head of the respective department.

The following terms have been set by the faculty regarding the time-aspect of the sabbatical:

  • Employment of a minimum of 5 years, to be eligible for a 6 months long sabbatical
  • Employment of a minimum of 10 years, to be eligible for a 12 months long sabbatical

Preferably, the sabbatical should be carried out during a consecutive period of 6 months and cannot exceed 12 months. The Strategic Board for Research (FON) will, during the application review, argue for a certain measure of flexibility regarding the extent of the time-frames.

The Strategic Board for Research (FON) recommends that funding for a sabbatical should only be granted

  1. if the application includes a research plan of high quality and
  2. if the planned project clearly benefits from the long-term stay at the university and
  3. if the application includes a distinct description of how the research and doctoral education at the Faculty of Medicine, Umeå university, benefit from the sabbatical.

The department will receive funding to cover the teaching costs incurred during the granted sabbatical.

The application must include the following:
1. A cover letter signed by the applicant including a) the purpose of the sabbatical b) expected benefits to the faculty by the sabbatical c) information about applicant's employment at the department
The application must be co-signed by the Head of the department.
2. Research plan, not exceeding 4 pages (A4)
3. A short CV, consisting of no more than 1 page (A4)
4. A list of 10 selected publications, the list must not exceed 1 page (A4)
5. An invitation letter from the host university, confirming that the applicant has a place of office and access to the necessary resources needed to carry out the research plan.

The application can be either in Swedish or English.

A signed and scanned original must be sent digitally to the Registrar, medel@diarie.umu.se, no later than Monday, April 1st.
