Remodelling the External Relations Office

16 January 2020

From 1 January 2020, the External Relations Office changes its name to the Research Support and Collaboration Office (Enheten för forskningsstöd och samverkan). Simultaneously, the office also diversifies its support offered to the university's researchers and the Management.

The reason behind the name change is that Umeå University from 2020 will invest both in increasing and highlighting its research support. This means that the External Relations Office with its subunit Grants Office instead will become the Research Support and Collaboration Office. In Swedish Enheten för forskningsstöd och samverkan.

In addition to its support for collaboration, the office will be able to offer:

  • Support and information on more funding bodies than previously.
  • Guidance in more areas, such as research ethics and researchers' ethics, analysis and Life Science.
  • One way in, like a "one-stop shop", for all research support at Umeå University.

Simplifying for researchers

Head of Office Hans-Olov Byquist explains that research fellows and administrators have found it difficult to know where to turn and for what, since the research support has been spread across several administrative offices at Umeå University. For some errands, you are referred to the University Library, next time the former Grants Office at the External Relations Office, or even the innovation centre.

"Now, we do everything in our power to simplify contacts. The individual researchers should not have any problems in finding out where they can find support. They can always turn to the Research Support and Collaboration Office, and we'll guide them onwards."

Similar way of working with collaboration

According to Hans-Olov Byquist, the concept is familiar.

"The idea of a one-stop shop has been in action for years when it comes to collaboration. And we'll continue to function as the first line for external parties who wish to collaborate with Umeå University. And in the same way, we will support our researchers and educations seeking collaborations with other parties in society."

New guiding website

Several improvements are underway. Together with the Communications Office and ITS, the Research Support and Collaboration Office is setting up a new web page displaying the collective research support available at Umeå University. It will be like a display window to the various steps of the application and project process.

"The idea is to give visitors quick filtering options to find out who to turn to for assistance, depending on where in the process you are," says Hans-Olov Byquist.

The web pages and signposting for the new Research Support and Collaboration Office will be updated shortly.
