Call for funding for research thus enabling sabbatical

2 March 2020

The Strategic Board for Research opens a call for basic funding for research, thus enabling teachers and researchers the opportunity to carry out a sabbatical at an international university. Applications can be admitted at any time until December 31st, 2020.

The Strategic Board for Research (FON) at the Faculty of Medicine opens a call for basic funding for research, thus enabling teachers and researchers the opportunity to carry out a sabbatical at an international university. The call aims to strengthen the research and doctoral studies at the faculty.

To be eligible to apply, the applicant must have a permanent position as an actively researching professor or associate professor (universitetslektor). Application is made in consultation with the head of the applicant's department. The period of employment in relation to the length of the sabbatical may vary; the following general guidelines apply:

  • Permanent employment as professor/associate professor (universitetslektor), to be eligible for a 3 months long sabbatical (continuous period)
  • Employment of a minimum of 5 years, to be eligible for a 6 months long sabbatical (continuous period)
  • Employment of a minimum of 10 years, to be eligible for a 12 months long sabbatical (continuous period)

The Strategic Board for Research (FON) has decided to also accept applications for shorter sabbaticals, i.e. 3-6 months long sabbaticals.

The Strategic Board for Research (FON) recommends that funding for a sabbatical should only be granted

  1. if the application includes a research plan of high quality (the research plan should focus on the research that is to be done during the sabbatical) and
  2. if the planned project clearly benefits from the long-term stay at the university and
  3. if the application includes a distinct description of how the research and doctoral education at the Faculty of Medicine, Umeå university, benefit from the sabbatical.

The length of the sabbatical must be justified in the application.

The department will receive funding to cover the research cost of the associate professor's/professor's salary during the granted sabbatical ("andelen forskningsanslag i lärarlönemedlen för berörd lärare").

Please note that the applicant must pay for travel and living costs during the sabbatical.

The application must include:

1. A cover letter signed by the applicant including

a) the purpose of the sabbatical
b) expected benefits to the faculty by the sabbatical
c) information about applicant's employment at the department
The application must be co-signed by the head of the department.

2. Research plan, not exceeding 4 pages (A4)

3. A short CV, consisting of no more than 1 page (A4)

4. A list of 10 selected publications, the list must not exceed 1 page (A4)

5. An invitation letter from the host university, confirming that the applicant has a place of office and access to the necessary resources needed to carry out the research plan.

The application can be either in Swedish or English.

A signed and scanned original must be sent digitally to FON's faculty office secretary Cecilia Elofsson, cecilia.elofsson@umu.se.
Please note that applications can be admitted to FON at any time until December 31st, 2020.

Please label the email, in the subject: Forskningssresurs för möjliggörande av sabbatical-vistelse för forskning FS 2.1.6-294-20.

The applications are first reviewed by the Strategic Board for Research (FON) and the final decision is made by the Faculty Board (FN).
