Realise a project idea with help from goal-oriented students

21 May 2018

A team of goal-oriented final year students from the civil engineering programs look forward to embarking on one of your research projects or one of your commercial ideas.

In the 15 credits course Design-Build-Test, students work in teams of 6-8 people from the civil engineering programmes in biotechnology, engineering physics, computer science, mechanical engineering, and industrial economics for five months with innovative projects. The aim is to combine all team members' skills and maximally boost their effectiveness for successful projects. Therefore, all groups receive training in agile project management and group development.

Two project examples from last year:

• Automatic tree detection and species identification by fusion of laser scanner data and camera images where the students, in collaboration with SLU, equipped a portable laser scanning system with a camera to identify trees, and used deep learning for species determination.

• Pilot-scale reactor for water treatment: Removing pharmaceuticals from drinking water with ozone injection, where the students, in collaboration with Miljötekniskt Center AB and Umeå University, built a radical hydroxyl reactor in lab scale to purify wastewater from drugs.

Posters from these and other projects can be found here:

Bernard Wessels and Judith Felten have made a short video about the scientific background and project management of their project on measuring stem movement in tilted hybrid aspen:
