The appointment is regulated in The rule of procedure for Umeå University and The Rule of procedure for the election and appointment of members of the Faculty Boards – including dean and pro dean (documents available in Swedish). The Election Committee at each faculty has the assignment of nominating one woman and one man, chosen among the permanently employed professors or senior lecturers at the faculty, to the posts as chair (dean) and vice chair (pro dean) of the Faculty Board. It is also the role of the Election Committee to nominate one or two individuals as external members.
