Slight decrease in student admissions for the autumn

9 August 2022

934 students have been admitted to the Faculty of Science and Technology's beginner programmes, a decrease of 5.9 percent compared to last year. Master's programmes, on the other hand, have increased marginally. Overall, the number of students admitted to the faculty's programmes has decreased by 4.7 per cent, which is exactly the same percentage decrease as the average for higher education programmes nationally compared to 2021.

The number of admitted students has decreased compared to 2021, but is still higher than before the pandemic.

The Faculty of Science and Technology's bachelor's programmes had 284 first-time applicants and lands at 206 admitted students, which is a decrease of 5.1 per cent compared to autumn 2021. The largest decrease is seen in the bachelor's programme in Environmental health, where only nine students were admitted, a decrease of 52.6 per cent. Biology and Earth Science admitted 58 students, a decrease of 22.7 percent.
The newly launched bachelor's programme in Mathematics had 19 admitted student, more than meeting expectations, as the planning figure was 13 students.

Master of Science programmes in Engineering decreased by 4.9 per cent, from 446 admissions last year to 424 this year. The biggest drop has been in the MSc in Energy Engineering, with 42 accepted compared to 55 last autumn. Bachelor of Science programmes in engineering fell by 17.8 per cent overall, from 163 to 134 admissions. The biggest drop was in the Electronics and Computer Engineering programme, from 22 to 10 admitted students.

More than before the pandemic

The Master of Science programme in Pharmacy increased by two students, from 23 to 25, and the Architecture programme admitted 85 students, compared to 80 last year.

The preparatory one year programme in science decreased by 24.8 percent, from 270 to 203 admissions. The Master's programmes in total showed a slight increase, from 214 last year to 216 students admitted in sample 2 this year.

One reason for the drop in admissions is that application numbers to the faculty's programmes was higher during the pandemic. This fall's 934 admissions to the beginner programmes compare to 2019 when the number of admissions was 803.

The final number of new programme students will become clear sometime in September, when the new students are registered.
