New English translation for “biträdande” in managerial titles

16 October 2023

The words biträdande and ställföreträdande in managerial titles have so far both been translated as deputy in English. These words will now be translated differently to better separate these roles and their mandates. This means that biträdande is now translated as assistant.

Those with a title or job role containing the word biträdande now get a new English title where assistant replaces deputy. For instance, assistant head of department for biträdande prefekt. This is a result of the confusion created by biträdande and ställföreträdande having had the same translation: deputy.

If you have typed out your English title in the presentation of your personal page on umu.se, in your email signature or anywhere else, you need to change this manually. You can do so now. Titles also need to be revised in documents and on web pages. The Human Resources Office and the Communications Office will implement the changes needed in systems listing the University's titles.
