Before the department merger, the Faculty of Medicine had 13 departments and three units, and the size of them varies from about 10 to over 120 employees. One goal of the organizational review has been more equal-sized departments. By way of comparison, it can be said that the country's other medical faculties have between two and eight departments.
Department of Diagnostics and Intervention
The Department of Radiation Sciences and the Department of Surgical and Perioperative Sciences merge to form the Department of Diagnostics and Intervention.
The two already have previous collaborations and points of contact in several areas. For example, they collaborate within basic education around semester 7 of the medical program, employees collaborate within the Translational Research Center (TRC) and administratively they collaborate within the so-called "four-leaf clover" with, among other things, a communicator and support resources within postgraduate education and HR.
The department will have approximately 125 employees.

Department of Medical and Translational Biology
At the turn of the year, the Department of Integrative Medical Biology, IMB, and the work unit Umeå Center for Molecular Medicine (UCMM) will merge under the name Department of Medical and Translational Biology. During a transition period, UCMM will operate as its own unit: Section of Molecular Medicine.
For some years now, IMB and UCMM have been in the same building, the Biology Building, and are co-located and integrated in the experimental research activities in several ways. The managements of IMB and UCMM sees the merger as an opportunity to change the departments name, and that this also marks a fresh start that the organizational change entails.
The department will have approximately 140 employees.
