Recruitment of new Vice-Chancellor starts in the spring

7 December 2023

The Vice-Chancellor's current term of office ends on 30 June 2025. Vice-Chancellor Hans Adolfsson has announced that he will not make himself available for re-election for another three-year period. At their assembly on 6 December, the University Board hence decided to initiate a recruitment process to find a new Vice-Chancellor from 1 July 2025 onwards.

When Hans Adolfsson's current term of office runs out, he will have held the Vice-Chancellor's position for nine years. Hans Adolfsson has now announced that he will not be at the University's disposal for a final three-year term of office.

"I have the privilege to lead a successful university and I enjoy my time in Umeå. Umeå University has committed and driven students and staff, and we've worked hard to strengthen and develop a university with high-quality education and research. But after nine years, I feel it's time for someone else to take over the leadership of Umeå University."

The chairperson of the University Board, Anna Ekström, will lead the appointment committee that will propose a new vice-chancellor.

"Hans Adolfsson has done, and continues to do, a fine job as head of the university. I fully respect his decision to not continue for another term of office. This gives the board ample time to initiate the recruitment process," says Anna Ekström.

Before the University Board proposes a vice-chancellor candidate to the Swedish Government, teachers, other employees and students will get the opportunity to ask questions to prospective candidates.

The Government is expected to reach a formal decision in spring 2025.
