Prestigious MSCA grant for postdoc in physics

Anton Kirch, Postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Physics, receives funding from one of Europe's most prestigious research funding programs, MSCA.
"It gives me the freedom to conduct the research I like and find valuable," he says.

MCSA is short for Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions and a part of Horizon Europe, the EU framework program for research and innovation. Anton Kirch is one of four postdoctoral researchers at Umeå University to be awarded the grant in this round, in fierce competition with other young researchers across Europe.

Anton Kirch receives 222 727 euros for the project Understanding the ion distribution in LECs (UNID) with Ludvig Edman as supervisor.

"Our group investigates electrochemical cells that can emit light, so-called LECs. Our goal is to produce low-cost and flexible light-emitting panels via printing or spraying, but we face numerous challenges that require a detailed understanding of the underlying physics. This is where my project kicks in: How can we describe the dynamics of the ions in the electrolyte and their interaction with the semiconductor? To answer this question is crucial if we want to achieve an efficient, sustainable, and long-lasting LEC lamp," says Anton Kirch.

Anton Kirch moved to Umeå with his family in the summer of 2023 and is happy to have the opportunity to continue his research for at least two more years, thanks to the MSCA grant.

"If you want to advance your career after your PhD by moving abroad to another university, provide key qualities to the new research environment, and have an interesting scientific idea, MSCA is a very good call," he says.
