Quality system introduced to research education

2 February 2017

The Vice-Chancellor has decided that a quality system for doctoral education should be introduced at Umeå University from 1 February 2017. No such system has previously existed.

The objective of the quality system is to contribute for the education to reach its targets, and to improve and develop the quality of the education.

The quality system focuses on these parts:

  • the environment for the doctoral education
  • recruitment and admission
  • instruction and supervision
  • study plans
  • dissertation
  • the public defence of the dissertation
  • courses
  • internationalisation
  • equal opportunities
  • influence

The quality system is based upon a proposal by a working team with researchers and one doctoral student representative. The Umeå University Vision 2020 and recommendations from the European Higher Education Area (ESG) and the European University Association (EUA) have formed the basis for the work of the group, also complemented by regulations and qualitative targets, and Umeå University's own rules and regulations.

The proposal has been under consideration by the organisation and has since been revised. A plan for the implementation will be drawn up and the quality system will be translated into English.
