Criteria for qualified and excellent teachers

The criteria for qualified or excellent teacher has been revised by the Pedagogical Qualification Board during fall 2016.

Criteria for qualified teachers

A qualified teacher is expected to have teaching experience beyond what is required for employment as a teacher at Umeå University. The level of qualified emphasises the engagement and expertise of teachers in planning, implementation, examination, evaluation and development of teaching and in their interaction with students.

Extensive teaching experience at university level

This is manifested by the teacher having experience of
● various teaching assignments
● teaching different types of student groups
● being a course or component coordinator
● teaching using different teaching forms

Teaching ability

This is manifested by the teacher
● consciously and actively striving to plan, implement, examine, evaluate and develop teaching in order to support student learning and train students in critical thinking
● applying the specific conditions for their subject by developing and adapting forms of teaching and examination
● having received positive assessments of their teaching ability

Engagement in the teaching assignment

This is manifested by the teacher
● continuously taking the initiative to develop individual teaching efforts, components and courses
● systematically evaluating their teaching and using the results to improve the quality of education
● developing their higher education teaching competence through continuing professional development and discussions with colleagues and students
● developing their subject and professional knowledge through continuing professional development and discussions with colleagues and other actors

A reflective approach towards their own teaching activities

This is manifested by the teacher
● being aware of their educational starting points and standpoints and how these relate to other courses/components in the programme
● reflecting on the goals of higher education, the subject's conditions, teaching forms and how these underpin the design of their own teaching
● problematising the course contents and teaching forms in discussions with colleagues and students
● learning from past experiences, both positive and less successful

Criteria for excellent teachers

An excellent teacher is expected to have educational experience beyond what is required for the qualified level. The level of excellent emphasises educational leadership and the ability to disseminate knowledge.

A scholarly approach to the practice of higher education teaching

This is manifested by the teacher having
● deepened their higher education teaching competence in a versatile and systematic manner
● developed teaching materials, study resources and policy documents
● communicated their higher education teaching knowledge and skills through contributions to national and international journals, and participation in networks and conferences

Engagement and expertise in educational leadership

This is manifested by the teacher
● initiating and pursuing the development of programmes and courses
● promoting higher education teaching development, cooperation and participation at different levels within the university
● initiating educational discussions, seminars and conferences within and outside the university
● receiving positive assessments of their engagement and expertise

Developed their higher education teaching activities over time

This is manifested by the teacher
● reporting the significance of their scholarly approach for programme development and student learning
● reporting the significance of their educational leadership for programme development and student learning
● having educational development and management assignments of a strategic and operational nature
● describing visions and plans for educational development work based on the conditions of higher education
