Call for participation in MIRAI Japan-Sweden Global Challenges Teams

Are you interested in contributing to solving Global Challenges within the MIRAI alliance of Swedish and Japanese universities? Then you should get involved in the next phase of MIRAI during 2024-2026. The deadline to apply is 15 April 2024.

You will also get the opportunity to be a part of creating an environment to promote long-term research collaborations, facilitate PhD student and researcher mobilty. Furthmore, you will have the opportunity to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in education and research and facilitate joint efforts between academia, industry and external partners.

How can you get involved?

For the next phase of MIRAI we are seeking participants, academics and non-academics for our Global Challenge Teams and Specific Task Teams.

About the Global Challenges Teams (GCT)

MIRAI will form four Global Challenges teams, for the targeted challenges consisting of researchers from both Sweden and Japan. Researchers, both junior and senior a re welcome to apply to be come members of the Global Challenges Team (GCT) for the following targeted challenges:

Challenge 1: Health and an Ageing Population (Part of SDG 3)

Challenge 2: Climate Adaption, Disaster and Risk Management and Prevention (Part of SDG 13

Challenge 3: Resilient Cities and Communities Policies, Strategies, Local Government, and Urban Planning (Part of SDG 11)

Challenge 4: Materials for Energy Conversion and Storage: Renewable Energy, Solar Energy Conversion, Electrification, Sustainable Processes, and Use of Resources (Part of SDG 7)

  • Each GCT consists of approximately 10 researchers (5 members from each country). Two co-chairs (one from each country) are responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of their own group.
  • To maximize the outcomes and to come up with creative solutions to global issues, these groupings will be formed based on a diversity in subject areas, sectors, and approaches with the shared idea to work in the same direction towards a common objective. We also strive for a balance in gender.
  • The groups should also have members from stakeholders outside the universities, in order to have a diversity of perspectives.
  •  Each GCT will have two co-chairs, one from each country and will the co-chairs will be responsible for running the smooth operation of their own group. The responsibility as a co-chair may rotate no more than once a year.
  • Team chairs lead the scientific or technical direction of the GCT and coordinate the tasks of each GCT.
  • Team members are expected to contribute with their expertise and experience to the group. They will work with the group to set goals, design activities, and provide feedback on proposals.
  • While it is difficult to estimate the exact time commitment needed for these roles it is important to dedicate sufficient time to be able to engage appropriately. Digital meetings are expected to be held regularly within the groups.

Selection process

Applications will be reviewed by the MIRAI internal working group at Umeå University. The final selection will then be made by the coordinating universities, Kyushu University, Japan and Umeå University, Sweden.
