The supervisor day is an event for inspiration and knowledge transfer for supervisors at the Faculty for Science and Technology. There will be ample opportunity to network with colleagues that are involved in doctoral education. Together we can make our doctoral programmes even better!
The next supervisor day is on June 11th, 2024. More information will be added.
Welcome to the fourth Supervisor Day!
The supervisor day will be conducted in English. The event will be at Aula Biologica, February 22, 13.00-16.00. Deadline for registration is 15 of February. Register here: https://survey.umu.se/Survey/5019
What is the supervisor's role in matters related to ethics in the research process? During the first part of the event, Erika Sörensson, research coordinator at the Research Support and Collaboration Office, informs about good research practice and ethics in the research process. The participants will be updated about the current rules and guidelines to follow, and where to find guidance in difficult dilemmas here at Umeå University.
For the second part of the event, Sofia Jeppsson, associate professor of philosophy and teacher at the faculty research ethics course for PhD students, will move the discussion on to ethical questions beyond the regulatory framework. Supervisors must see their PhD students as researchers in their own right, entitled to developing their skills for their own sake. PhD students' ethical training can't consist merely of an intensive course in research ethics – it must be an ongoing process, in which the supervisor functions as a role model. Supervisors should show respect for the laws regulating ethical permissions to do research rather than treating them as annoying obstacles, and reason with their students about complicated matters such as preference bias in experimental designs and informed consent.During the half-day, which will be in English, supervisors will get the opportunity to discuss cases and what the regulatory landscape means both for the individual supervisor and as a collective of peers.
Welcome to the third Supervisor Day!
The theme of the day is: Problems in PhD supervision – how to avoid them and what to do if it goes astray
This afternoon aims to provide you as a supervisor with strategies how to prevent and manage difficult situations that may arise with doctoral students. Subjects that will be addressed are communication, expectations and demands and the different views on supervision as well as who is responsible for what when it comes to the working environment.
Mikal Björkström, psychologist at Feelgood, Pernilla Jansson, human resources strategist, and Frank Dignum, professor and experienced supervisor, will be leading the seminar together with Frank Drewes professor and Frankie Ekerholm, faculty office coordinator at the Dean's Office.
The supervisor day will be conducted in English. The event will be at Väven, November 8, 13.00-16.30. Deadline for registration is 1st of November. Register here: https://survey.umu.se/Survey/890
