STINT Teaching Sabbatical

STINT's Teaching Sabbatical programme gives researchers and lecturers, who are passionate about education, the opportunity to teach abroad during an autumn semester.

Teaching Sabbatical is a programme by STINT (The Foundation for the Internationalization of Higher Education and Research) that gives researchers and lecturers the opportunity to teach abroad. As a participant in Teaching Sabbatical, you will stay at a university abroad and teach during an autumn semester (August – December). The intention is for you to teach, either by giving a course on your own or co-teach with a colleague at the host institution ("co-teaching").

Why Teaching Sabbatical?

The purpose of Teaching Sabbatical is to develop individuals and institutions, and to contribute to educational renewal and the creation of new networks. Your task is to gain a broad understanding of learning and teaching policies, and how these institutions implement and develop learning and teaching processes, as well as address educational quality standards. Great emphasis is placed on the added value of the stay abroad.

The scholarship for Teaching Sabbatical covers most of the costs that you and your family will have during your semester abroad.

How to apply for Teaching Sabbatical

To receive a scholarship for Teaching Sabbatical, you go through a process in different steps:

  1. Get nominated by Umeå University to STINT.
    You submit your application to Ingrid Svensson, Head of International Office. The Vice-Chancellor decides who will be nominated by Umeå University to STINT.
  2. STINT reviews the applications of the nominees.
  3. The host university examines the applications of the nominees.
  4. STINT decides who will be granted a scholarship.
    The decision on who will receive the scholarship will normally come during December.

The application for Teaching Sabbatical announcement at Umeå University is usually open June-August each year. Keep an eye out in newsletters and calendars for more information.

Send your application to no later than 14 August. Please note that it is important that you do not exceed the maximum word count in each question.

Support through the application process

Umeå University offers local support for the application process. We offer an information meeting about Teaching Sabbatical and also a workshop where you can get advice about how to write your application. These are usually held in April and-June.

Criteria for applying for applying for Teaching Sabbatical

There are some criteria to be able to apply. You must:

  • Hold a doctorate degree
  • Be employed at the university
  • Be well-established in the operations at Umeå University.

Where you can go

If you are granted a scholarship, you will have the opportunity to go to one of STINT's selected partner universities in the USA, Singapore, Hong Kong or Japan. STINT's partner higher education institutions represent a diversity of higher education institutions that conduct high-quality education in each part of the world.
