Safer and more up-to-date computer with client management

A new client management system is beeing introduced for all employees at Umeå University. There are many benefits to having a client-managed computer. Important settings and software are already in the computer and there is a routine for software updates, installations and virus protection.

A new client management system is being implemented

1. During the fall of 2023, the majority of the client-managed personal computers at Umeå University were moved to the new Intune system.
2. In the spring of 2024, shared computers, Macs and mobile devices will be moved to the new Intune system.
3. As of February 1, 2024, all personal computers that are purchased are automatically client-managed via the client management system Intune.
4. The goal is for the implementation of Intune to be completed by the end of June 2024.

This is client management

Client management is a method to create a safer and more updated IT environment for all employees at Umeå University. The service is provided by ITS and helps you as a user to work on your computer without having to think about security settings and updates, management of hardware, operating systems, software, drivers and licenses.

There are many advantages to a client-managed computer:

  • Get started quickly: A client-managed computer comes prepared with all settings and software to use the most common IT services at Umeå University.
  • Enhanced security: Using client management, ITS can ensure that your computer is properly configured to counter IT and other security incidents. Client management helps you keep your computer's operating system and software up to date and includes complete virus protection.
  • Easier program installations: You can quickly install new programs that Umeå University has an agreement for via the "Company Portal" that is pre-installed on your computer.

Good to know

  • Once the move to Intune is complete, Windows Hello will start the next time you log into your computer, follow the steps outlined to configure your login.
  • You must choose a 6-digit pin code. The code is used to identify oneself to the computer. Using a PIN to log into your computer is more secure by not exposing your password. When you enter the pin code, you should be on campus, connected via the fixed network or eduroam. If you are sitting at home, you can skip the step of entering a PIN code and do it when you are on campus. In the meantime, you can log in as usual with your password.
  • You can also configure login using fingerprint or face recognition. Then follow the instructions on the screen.
  • The Software Center is uninstalled and replaced by the "Company Portal"
  • For those who had a PIN code for Bitlocker when starting the computer, it will be removed. The hard drive will still be encrypted.
  • Microsoft 365 will be upgraded to the latest version (without Skype).
  • Defender (antivirus) for Endpoint is activated
  • All configurations and security policies are applied
  • Windows Update runs and installs missing updates.
  • OneDrive on the computer is configured automatically, but without enabling synchronization. We recommend that you do it yourself and check which files should be synced to the cloud.
  • Eduroam is reinstalled when moving. This may result in you being without a connection for a period if you only use Eduroam. We recommend that you use a fixed connection or Umu wlan if you notice that Eduroam is not working. Eduroam will be back shortly and you don't need to make any adjustments yourself.
