Reuse and recycling of IT equipment

ITS provides a new service that takes care of consumed IT equipment at Umeå University. All departments and units can submit computers, monitors, printers, smartphones and tablets to ITS who, with the help of a partner, ensure that the equipment is either repaired and reused or recycled.

How the service works

The service for submitting consumed IT equipment for reuse or recycling can be used by all departments and units at Umeå University. The head of department / prefect in consultation with IT contacts is responsible for deciding which equipment to submit.

ITS receives the unusable equipment in a special room in the MIT house (https://link.mazemap.com/T8kHW8rt) and the partner 3stepIT then takes care of reuse and recycling. The equipment submitted to ITS must not contain sensitive personal data, be locked to Umeå University or require any passwords.

Types of equipment that can be submitted:

  • Desktop computers (all types). Make sure there is no BIOS password or hard disk lock, DEP / KNOX / Google account / iCloud password / lock is removed / unlocked before sending.
  • Laptops with charger or dock (all manufacturers and models). Make sure there is no BIOS password or hard disk lock, DEP / KNOX / Google account / iCloud password / lock is removed / unlocked before sending.
  • TFT / LCD monitors
  • Printers
  • Smartphones (make sure they are not locked to the university via dep, icloud, knox or google account etc.)
  • Tablets (make sure they are not locked to the university via dep, icloud, knox or google account etc.)

Types of equipment we do not accept:

  • TV sets
  • Microwave ovens
  • Kitchen equipment
  • OH equipment
  • Large typewriters / copiers owned by an external party.

How to use the service

To use the service, proceed as follows:

  1. Identify the unusable equipment. The head of department / prefect in consultation with IT contacts is responsible for deciding which equipment to submit.
  2. Prepare the unusable equipment. The IT equipment you are going to submit to ITS must be prepared by making sure that there are no locked accounts left on any of the devices submitted (such as BIOS password / hard disk lock or for example DEP / KNOX / Google account / iCloud password / lock). In particular, BIOS passwords and iCloud connections must be removed by the department and unit as far as possible. If a device is locked with any of the above-mentioned possibilities or services, the device cannot be reused but must be scrapped. The same applies to laptops without power adapter or docking station, they will also be scrapped. For the services where the department or unit itself does not have the opportunity to influence (such as DEP), you need to put a note or otherwise mark the device to facilitate the handling at ITS.
  3. Inform ITS about what you are going to submit. When all equipment is prepared by you, you must inform ITS about which equipment you are going to submit. This is done by contacting ITS Servicedesk.
  4. Submit equipment to ITS. When you have received a confirmation from ITS and a time when you can submit the equipment, you will come with it to our premises in the MIT house: https://link.mazemap.com/T8kHW8rt
